Recipient access
No data requiredReaches every phone on the continent
USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) works by dialling a short code — like *384*1234# — on any mobile phone. No internet connection, no smartphone, no app. Just a SIM card. It is the single most inclusive redemption channel in Africa.
How it works for the recipient
Step 1
Recipient receives notification
An SMS tells them their reward value and the USSD code to dial.
Step 2
Dial the short code
Recipient dials the configured USSD code on any phone — feature phone, smartphone, or basic handset.
Step 3
Navigate the menu
A simple numeric menu guides them: view balance, choose category, confirm redemption.
Step 4
Confirmation
SMS confirmation sent on successful redemption. No internet required at any point.
Who it reaches
USSD reaches feature phone users, people in low-connectivity rural areas, and anyone without a data plan. In markets like Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda, a significant portion of your recipients may not have a reliable data connection — USSD ensures they can still redeem.

Use cases

Distributor incentives
Trade partners in peri-urban areas redeem target bonuses via USSD without needing a smartphone or app.
Healthcare worker rewards
Community health workers in remote postings receive and redeem rewards without data connectivity.
Technical notes
RibiRewards Payout integrates with in-country USSD gateway providers per market. USSD sessions are synchronous and stateless — the menu logic is handled server-side. Average session duration is 30–60 seconds. Configurable menu depth and language.
